Part personal narrative and part protest, this short documentary follows one survivor’s attempt to expose a religious doctrine that endangers women and empowers abusers.

About the film

I made this short documentary to break nearly two decades of silence about my experience of abuse, violence, and gender oppression in the Jehovah’s Witness religion. For me, this film is both a tool for healing and a form of resistance: I want to expose the doctrines and practices that endanger women and empower abusers among Jehovah’s Witnesses and other high-control religions all around us.

My hope is that others who have experienced similar abuse—both within and outside the Witness faith—will see themselves in this story and be able to advocate for their own safety and healing.

About the letter

During the making of this film, I sent 1,000 letters to Jehovah’s Witness headquarters and Kingdom Halls across North America calling for substantial change to their doctrines and policies to make the organization safer for women and others.

Some of the content of those letters is shared in the film.
